Design & historical context

  • Obverse: Portrait of the celebrated national poet Jonas Mačiulis-Maironis (1862-1932) at right, large vertical denomination “20” centre, with lithuanian legend “DVIDEŠIMT LITŲ” beneath. Floral guilloche in vivid rose-green palette recalls the poet’s romantic imagery.

  • Reverse: The Kaunas War Museum & Freedom Monument flanked by the victory statue of Liberty; Vytis shield upper right. Dramatic sunset tones symbolise Lithuania’s struggle and rebirth after independence.

Issued just two years after regaining independence from the USSR, the first “Litas” series embodies cultural pride and economic sovereignty.
